Railways Versos Lorries
COMPETITION IN WELLINGTON DISTR fC-T. WELLINGTON, March 24 The competition of motor lorries with the railways continues here, especially in the carriage of benzine to the country, and the lorries generally are able to get return loads of produce. .Meantime the lorries are playing havoc with the country roads, the upkeep of which falls heavily upon the general taxpayer in regard to main roads and upon the local bodies in regard to otliter roads. The present state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue much longer and next session there may liW? a revival of the Main Highways Bill, for the Government loses not only the railway freight, but also has to spend an increased amount a nroad maintenance. The Minister of Works has written to the local Automobile Chili stating that there was a suggestion that representatives of tlife executive of the Counties Association, the Automobile Association, and the Good Roads Association, should meet during the recess to consider the provisions most generally suitable for inclusion in the Bill, and invited the co-operation of the chili in this matter, suggesting that such a meeting should lie held iti Wellington early in May, so that it may he definitely known before the date wtton the House is to moot, what are the opinions held by the executive of those bodies, as representing the interests most closely concerned.
