WHEAT FARMERS DECISION CHRISTCHURCH, March 22.

A lengthy discussion, took place at the meeting of the Executive of the North Canterbury Farmer’s Union today on the question of whether the next season’s wheat should he under Government control, or whether there should be a free market. The various branches had been asked for their views and the majority were in favour of Government control. The importance of the Dominion producing its own foodstuffs was stressed in the discussion and also the fact that, if payable prices were not forthcoming. the wheat growing land would he deyoted to other purposes and the Dominion would be dependent on outside sources for its wheat supply. Eventually it- was agreed by ten votes to three:—“That in the opinion of this meeting that the Government should be asked favourably to consider the controlling wheat for another year by fixing a minimum price.

IMPERIALISTIC INNOVATON SOUGHT. CHRISTCHURCH, March 22. When Mr Emery, the manager of the Springboks’ athletic team was In Christchurch he referred to she project to hold periodical athletic contests among the universities of the world. The scheme came up for consideration at a meeting of the Canterbury College Athletic Club. The Secretary of the Club said that Air Emery’s proposals included Bending a New Zealand team to South Africa at the end of this year to .compete against representatives of the English Australian, and South African universities. It is impossible to send a New Zealand team this year, but proposals have been formulated which it was hoped would further the project. These were:

(1) A body to be called the “New Zealand University Sports Union” to be formed on the lines of the Australian Universities Sports Union; (2) the body to represent past and present students, with an executive in Wellington ; (3) finance to be derived from past and present students for object to improve the physical standard in New Zealand universities and to provide adequate representation at interuniversity games. In reply to a question, the Secretary said that the idea was to start the games among British Empire universitie sand eventually extend the scheme to the universities of other countries. A resolution was passed that the delegates to the Auckland conference at Easter be asked to consider carefully whether the games should not be restricted to the British Empire.
