• LoTIIALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. BRITISH FLAG PLANTED. tßeceived This Day at 8.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 20. Stefansson hns announced that without the consent or aid of the British Government he planted the British Flag and claimed Wrangell Island for Britain. The island is one of the most important in the Arctic region, because it strategically dominates North Eastern Siberia. His last expedition consisting of four "white men, whereof three were Americans iahded at Wrangell Island in September 1921. He confided his intention to his Canadian friend, hut the members of the party were not informed. Stefansson conferred recently with Mackenzie King (the Canadian Premier) and intends shortly to sail for England to confer with the British Government, which it is said, did not take action, owing to possible international complications.

AVERTING A WAR, i NEW YORK, March 19. Speaking at Los Angeles, Sir Auckland Gcddes denied that- he had ever said that the Four Power Treaty Fad averted an imminent war (as was cabled on March 18). He said he bad made a statement that the Washington Conference had for its object, as far as possible, the removal of war from the world. This meant naturally the Pacific as well as other parts of the globe; but- beyond that general statement, he did not and he could not go, in his official capacity. DAVIS CUP. NEW YORK, March 19. Correction.—ln the Davis Cup draw, Britain has a bye, and meets the winner of the Japan-Italy match. Denmark has a bye, and meets the winner of the France-Canada match.
