SECTARIAN STRIFE.

CRITICISM FROM PROTESTANT COUNCIL. [lir TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, March. The Council of Christian Congregations discussed Bishop Liston’s speech and Mr Gunson’s reply thereto, and as a' result, tlk* following resolution was passed “That this Council regrets exceedingly that Bishop Liston should have used the occasion of the Irish Treaty, which has been approved of the Parliament of Great Britain, by the Irish National Assembly, and by the world at large, to express suspicion of the liontesty of the intentions of the Mother Country, and discontent with the Treaty itself, and, generally, to malign' the Empire. This Council is unable to believe that any man is a good New Zealander who defames the Empire. This Council expresses its pleasure at the stern. attitude of the Mayor of Auckland, and it trusts an end will be voluntarily put to this type of mischievous utterance.”

FEELING IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, March 21. A large audience assembled in the Town Hall to hear an address by Bishop Locke. Oil the' Mayor (Mr Gunson) rising to introduce the Bishop, the audience made a remarkable demonstration, rising and cheering him for some minutes. Mr Gunson said he took this as an impersonal tribute to the attitude he had taken up towards the recent seditious statements and a£ an expression of the support of the citizens. No 81 branch of the Hibernian Societv passed a resolution whole-hearted-ly condemning the attacks on Bishop Listow, and extending him their warmest appreciation, unbounded and unalterable confidence.
