The N.Z. Railways. AVhat is the matter wltli the New Zealand railways? The gross revenue lias doubled within a very few years, but the net revenue lias b*en converted into a heavy loss, a dead-weight burden on the taxpayers. The service has grown appreciably. Miles have been added to the tracks, and except within the last few months traffic has expanded with the growth of population. The recent decrease in passengers and goods carried which lias contributed to the existing deficit was largely brought about by the Department itself in piling up the charges so as to repel business and drive it to petrol-driven vehicles.
