CYCLE RACE.
There was again a large crowd on Cass Square last evening to witness the two mile cycling race for lads under 18 years of age arranged by the newly formed Cycling Club. The track was in very rough order and requires considerable attention before it is safe for fast riding. There were eleven star- j ters, the scratch rider giving starts j up to 400 yards. The pace was a good one from the start but the scratch j rider soon began to pick up his handicap and by the end of the third round was up with the field which had hunched in the third round and palpably steadied the pace. Passing the stand for the last round the scratch rider was in front, with Adamson and Haussman close up. The pace livened hut near the centre south gate Adamson’s front wheel touched the leader and he came down. Haussinann who was a couple of yards behind also came down as a result. The latter remounted but what had promised to he a good finish was spoilt and Wolverham rode on an easy winner by 30 to 40 yards from Williams with Haussmann third and Gooch fourth. The riders who fell were not hurt. The starters and their handicaps were as follows: Wolverham (scr.) 1 Williams (360yds.) 2 Haussmann (250yds.) 3 Gooch (350yds.) ..... 4 Adamson (300yds), Wogan (850yds.), , Stickles (350yds), Ross (850yds), B. i Gibbons (360yds), L. Gibbons (400 yds) and Butland (400yds). Mr G. Adamsan was starter. The race wa s closely watched and the winner was warmly applauded as he passed the post an easy winner.
