JOHANNESBURG. Dec. 29. After nearly 60 hours of uni easing work rescuers extricated a miner named Logan who was pinned to tin) ground by a fall of rock in the Ferreira Mine. Logan, however, died from his injuries and exhaustion. Efforts were also made to save a white miner named Johnston who was pinned down a few feet away and spoke to the would-be rescuers. He took food and drink, but was so wedged in that it was impossible to pull him out without fatally injuring him. While the rescuers were trying to clear the final barriers another fall of rock occurred, followed by an inrush o r gas, so that the rescuers had to retire. The manager, at grave personal risk, returned and told Johnston the position. The victim received the news calmly and gave loving messages to his wife. The rescuers left Johnston still pinned down awaiting death.
