The final section of the Geddes Economy report will be published during the' week-end. It deals with the Post Office, Stationery Office, Foreign Affairs, and Law expenses. This section „f the report recommends savings of about sixteen millions. There is serious trouble in the shipbuilding and engineering trade. It is likely to result in hundreds of thousands more men being unemployed by the middle of March. The 'Engineering Employers’ Federation has announced that owing to a failure to come to an agreement the Amalgamated Engineering Union have decided to decline to employ any member of a Trade Union which does not permit its members to work overtime and night shifts, whenever possible. Sir Allen Smith lias already declared that the issue is: Whether the employers or the shop stewards shall say how the business shall he carried on.
The ship-building operatives are now balloting strongly against the acceptance of the employers’ proposed wage reduction, totalling 26s Od weekly per man.
