An opportunity is being afforded the citizens this evening to co-operate in regard to the utilisation of the municipal baths for their legitimate purpose. The position is that they arc at present in disuse, and in a state approaching wreck and ruin. This ha s been brought about through the difficulty in securing water. This latter obstacle is now lovercome, and ample water will ho available. To put the bath itself into containing order is estimated to cost £l2O. It is necessary to reinforce the bottom with a new layer of cement, and also the sides and ends for some, distance up from the base. The Borough Council has offered to find half this estimated cost, niid it is Left to the public to organise and find the other half and get the work done. The opportunity is here now and the desire is. to seize the Opening and act now. The meeting to-night will be for the purpose of constituting a committee to take the responsibility in hand, and carry it though. No doubt the members of the Swimming Club, the operations of which were ( .ut short through the want of water, will come forward and give a useful lead. The main fact is that there is a very fine hath practically available for use and the water is on hand for placing the building to its legitimate use. It would be a reflection on the good sense of the community if the fullest use is not made made of the present opportunity. A very good suggestion has been put forward by Mr Blank to assure a permanent supply of water, and that being secured, the popularity of the baths with the public will he beyond question. It remains now for the j people to take an interest in the mat- I ter, and show in practical way the I desire to see the baths reopened as soon j as possiblo. .

Westland appears to have made a very good investment when its pu.l>li c men decided to range under the banner of the Canterbury Progress League to ensure the speedier advancement of the district. In mitny ways ou r Christchurch friend.have shown' a most friendly and ready disposition to lift Westland ahead, and they arc doing so. Several personal touches in the past have helped the place- greatly. Now we have the big move in relation to tb,.> Winter school for farmers to which reference was made in a previous issue. Then there is the watchful suggestion from Mr Climie that the proposed Annette Kellerman picture should include a Westland section. This would be a very happy means of advertising the district all round the world for we take it there are few places where the world’s great lady swimmer do not find prominence. It was therefore very good of Mr Climie the organiser of the Progress 'League to remember Westland scenery will add to the vogue of the proposed picture. Our scenery is distinctive and is popular wherever shown. The moving pictures previous ly taken of our scenic charms were greatly appreciated in other places, and to such a picture as is now proposed some of our lake and aeq untie scenery would bo of special interest. Two points at once occur to us—Lake Kanieri and i

the Hokitika Gorge—ahd these bbauty spots should not be lost sight of if it is intended to itielude West land scehic spots, in the proposed picture. If the occasion comes to pass it will be another of the pleasing events which is going to make 1922 so memorable Hokitika and district.
