LONDON, Jan. 3

'[’he first live Commercial Re.learch Fellowships, instituted by the Executive Council of the British Empire Exhibition for competition among the Chambers of Commerce in the United Kingdom, ha vie been awarded. The successful competitors are the Cham hers of Commerce of London, Glasgow, Norwich, Warrington, and Oldham, which will each nominate a Fellow. The value of each Fellowship is not less than -fJoUU, and will include a first-class return ticket to the Dominion or Crown Colony to which the selected candidate will go. The subjects of research will be the best means of promoting inter-imperial trade in a selected staple industry, and the, methods whole by the British Empire Exhibition can further the interest of this trade. The Fellow will further investigate the potential resources in raw materials in the Dominion or colony visited, and the best means for exploiting them in the mutual interest of tlie Dominion and this country, and also report on the measures to be taken to ensure that these undeveloped resources shall be adequately represented ;it the British Empire Exhibition , and brought to the attention of interested financial and industrial groups.

Mr C. W. F. Harrison, the special commissioner for the Federation, of British Industries, who lias been in Now Zealand, Canada, Australia, and, South Africa to study the conditions of tradg and industrial development, is hack in London. As tlie result of his recent round, he considers that the Union of South Africa is in. a, better position commercially than, tlie other Dominions he visited. He found many evidences all over the country of the increase of Germ,an competition. British firms, in his experience, are very much averse from trading in Gorman goods, hut tljiey are finding it difficult to carry on without doing so.
