I 1 INVERCARGILL February 13. 1 To-night a fire broke out in the ware--1 house of Messrs Broad, Small and Co., Ltd., hardware merchants of Dee-St. The outbreak originated in a large brick-built store situated at the rear of ! the retail premises. The store was filled with merchandise, including a sliip- | ment landed from the Westmoreland to-day, Tho efforts of the Brigade were directed to confining the fire . to this building, in which they were successful, aided by the absence of wind. At 11.40 p.m. the fire was still burning, but appeared to be well in hand. No details of insurance's ajrc yet available, but it is understood that they are distributed among a large number of offices.
NAPIER WOOL SALE. NAPIER, February 13
The third wool sale of the season was 'held to-dny. There was a full bench of English, Colonial, American, Continental and local buyers. Generally speaking the sale went well and prices taken all round showed an advance up to Id per lb. on the January prices. 16,320 bales were offered, and nearly 90 per cent of the catalogue were sold. DROWNED. OPOTIKT, Feb. 14 Edward Frank Collins, contractor for the County Council, was drowned in the river -Metabanea. The deceased went to gather ferns for the camp and did not return. The police found a sack in the river and tho body in a pool ten feet deep. The deceased leaves a widow and six young children. SUPREME COURT. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 14 The Supreme Court sessions opened to-day before Justice Adams. There arc twelve indictments against eleven persons and true bills were returned in each ease. Jeremiah Bradley and Francis Joseph Quigley were admitted to probation for three years for theft, and Harold John Edward Barrett received five years hard labour for breaking and entering and theft. A SHEEP STEALING CASE. WANGANUI, Feb. 11. Matthew Mulcnhy, a young farmer, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court for stealing 200 sheep in April last at lluatiki. His partner, David Hyde, also pleaded guilty to receiving the sheep knowing they were stolen. Both were committed to I lie Supreme Court for sentence. FOUND UNOWNED. CHRISTOII I'KCIL Feb. 1 I.
Joyce Agnes Osmond, four years of ago. was drowned in a concrete tank at Kaikoura yesterday. The child missed at 5 o’clock.-.. Later the body was found in the tank at ('. Nilsen’s residence.
