RAILWAY RETURNS.. WELLINGTON, Feb. 9

The New Zealand Railway annual returns show an improved financial position. While th 0 South Island lines still show the expenditure (£2,149,208) exceeds the revenue (£1,979,178), the North Island’s profit has increased so as to make the total figures for the Dominion show' a surplus of £148,784. The North Island revenue is £3,041,830, and the expenditure £2,723,016.

BALDERSTONE FINED £25. GREYMOUTH, Feb. 10.

Mr Meidrufii gave his reserved judgment to-day in a case wherein R. T. Bailey on behalf of the Labour Department, proceeded against Willianl Balderstone, Secretary Blackball Miners’ Union, claiming £2OO for inciting and instigating an unlawful strike at Blackball mine oil Dec. i2th. last-. The Magistrate held that Baiderstone was not a worker v'ithin the meaning of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and held also that the offence was proved, but in view of it being Bnlderstone’s first individual offence, the penalty would be only a £25 fine, with costS: SOLICITOR FINED. Henry Edward Elliott, solicitor was fined £IOO, for failing for one month to have bis trust account for the year ending March 31st., audited by a qualified accountant the Crown Prosecutor stated Elliott "’ns fined in 1920 for a similar offence.
