QUESTIONS -IN-THE HOUSE. , WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. ; That the General Manager of Railways should visit the South Island and see for himself the effect of the cuts that have been-made was a request by Mr G. W. Forbes when the railway estimates were being considered. He held tbat the cuts had not resultedm economy and had caused very much inconvenience. The cuts could not be effective unless the railway users’ point of view were known as well as that o the Department. The railways s ou c be made as convenient as possible, so J as to compete with motor traffic. I The acting-Minister of Railways, the I : Hon D. H. Guthrie, stated that now that the war was over he and the General Manager would resume their visits periodically to various districts, was desired: to minimise as much as possible' the inconvenience resulting irom the cut. . . r The leader of the Opposition, Mr Wilford, asked the Minister of Railways whether he would'make a statement of the proposed railway cut, particularly between .Christchurch and Invercargill. The people,' he said, were anxious: to know what was proposed, and members were being-deluged with telegrams. Mr Guthrie said he was not in a position to make a statement, but he was anxious to do. his very host to meet the needs of the people. The cut would come into operation on Eobruary Id, and ho would make a statement shortly.
J. AR'BUCKLE’S arrest. WELLINGTON, Feb. 4
The police authorities have been advised that John Arbuckle, the late Secretary of the New Zealand Miners’ Federation, who was arrested in New South Wales recently, on a warrant charging him with the theft of a, considerable sum of money belonging to the Federation ,and to the Broken Hill Fund, is on board the steamer Tahiti, from Sydney. The vessel is due here on Monday from Sydney.

VISIT TO WEST COAST. WELLINGTON, February 4. Hon. Mr Coates has prom Red Mr IT. E. Holland that he will visit the West Const early in March, travelling from Nelson to Knramea, then to Westport, and on to Grey mouth, via Barryton. From Oroymouth, Mr Coates goes oil t;o Hokitika. His detailed itinerary will be communicated shortly.
