» SPRINGBOKS’ TOUR. ' RECORD TIMES AT AUCKLAND. BY TEEEGitAPH —PRESS .'Y3N., COPYRIGHT AUCKLAND, February 4. The Auckland centre’s sports, in con- , nection with the South Africans’ tour, were held in the Domain in beautiful weather. The track was in good order. The Springboks who competed' only in scratch events and two handicaps, outclassed local athletes. Interest in the relay race diminished as a result of Davidson’s absence. The attendance was about 8000. The principal results are: 100yds. New Zealand Championship— Ayres 1, Oosterlaak 2, Bukes 3, Kinsman 4. Also started G. Davidson N. B. Tanner (both of Auckland). Won by a yard, half a yard between second and third. Time 10 1.-5. The Africans quickly had control. 220yds North New Zealand Championship.—Ayres 1, Oosterlaak 2, Kinsman 3, Bukes 4. Also started G. Davidson (Auckland). Won by six inches; a yard between secand and third. The - race was well contested all the way. Davidson led to half way, but when three yards from the tape a muscle* in his thigh gave way; he was then headed. Time 22 1-5.
I 440yds Relay Championship.—Africa j (Kinsman, Johnson, Ayres, Oosterlaak, i Bukes) 1, Auckland (Tanner, Griffen, jW. L. Elliott Perry) 2. Owing to j Davidson’s injury the visitors' agreed to rUn four 110 yards instead of 880 yards as the programmes specified. The first three men were fairly well matched, the Africans having the ]ead of about a yard and a-half. Perry lost ground in getting his stick, Bukes winning by, eight yards. Time 45sec. 440yds. Handicap.—H. G. Reed (28 yards) I, Johnson (Africa) scr 2, L. A. Shirtcliffe (17yds) 3. This was the best race of the day. Johnson passed five competitors in the third round setting out in pursuit of Reed, who eventually won by a yard arid* a-half with Shirtcliffe 10 yards away.. Time 49 2-5. Johnson’s time was well within the New Zealand record of 50 2-5 sec.
In the half mile handicap, Leathern (scr.) broke the New Zealand record of 1.58 1-5, held by Dormer and Burke doing the distance in 1.57 4-5. A field of 13 started, whom the winner overhauled in great style from half way roiind. Won by five yards from C. F. Wren who was on the 30 yards mark.
In the one mile run Webber, the New Zealand' champion rah second to Grosser of Hamilton (25yds) who won by 13 yds. in 4.36 3-5.
