COAL OWNERS MEET. j WELLINGTON, February 2. I ; At the fourth general meeting of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association, Mr William Reece, the President stated that the year under review could not be said to be very encouraging from' the standpoint of companies that are working the coal mines. Most of the Companies were I very short of men, which had prevented them from mining all the coal that they could Sell; When they were just beginning to obtain good results, lie said, a slump, came, like a bolt from the blue. It had caused short tiftA to be worked at many mines, which, consequently reduced the outputs and the returns. A shortage of con] during the war had caused the railways and ! othe r large industries to refy Upon imported coal. Large orders were placed, the balance of which were only now arriving. Until these were used up, the New Zealand mines would certainly feel the pinch. . Referring to the making of awards by the Arbitration Qoui't lately to govern conditions in the coal mining industry, Mr Reece mentioned that it was felt that the time had arrived for the ending of bickering and uncertainty in the industry oiling to incessant labour troubles.
