ANGRY STRIKE FEELlNGreceived This Day at 11.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, February 2. the announcement that the Germis ton strike c ommittee intended inter viewing General Smuts caused mud excitement among the extremist sec tion of the strikers, it being interpreted as desertion from the federation. It transpires that when the Committee was sitting last night a hostile fcrowd of miners rushed the office and denounced the Cominittee for selling them to Smuts and kfept them prisoners until they promised to abandon the proposed action; In Pretoria,, feeling runs high. A meeting of strikers adopted a resolution asking the' federation to declare a general sympathetic strike on Saturday; goal strikers at Wetba'nk asked the federation to interview Smuts with a view to ending the coal trouble

Consequently the visit to General Smuts has been postponed, pending the decison of the Council. Meanwhile the new positions thus rais ed has ousted every other phase of too strike. I i SHACKLETON’S BODY. ' A PECULIAR COINCIDENCE. (Received This Day at 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, February 2. Mr Hussey cables that Sir E. Shackleton’s body wa & uoughly embalmed aboard the Quest, dressed in blue and white pyjamas and shrouded with canvas and sealed in a zin c casing and then placed in a coffin of plain deal. The case was covered with a tar stained Union Jack. When the body reached Monte Video it wa s properly embalmed and placed in a good coffin There was a chain of coincidences in connection with the Andes, acting as funeral ship for Shaekleton. When the Quest first limped into Lisbon, the Andes was the first to welcome and (entertain the explorers. Later the Quest met the Andes on the homeward journey at Rio and again was 'mtertained. Wisthing the explorers God speed, the ships went their respective way and now the Andes again on the outward voyage finds the body waiting conveyance to the Homeland. Honourable Elsie Mackay, 3rd. daughter of Lord Inchcape, has been granted a decree of nullity of marriage with Dennie Wyndham, the actor, on the ground of a false statement in ti ■ marriage notice, regarding the period of residence in Scotland. Mackay who is a famous cinema actress, known as Poppy Yyndham, nursed Wyndham in her parents war hospital, eloped and .was pursued to Glasgow, where s ! married. The Judge said Elsie had declared she was a resident of Scotland for fifteen days before her marriage. If the declaration was false she has exposed herself to penalties for perjury. BERTHING PLACES. Sir J« Cook and Mr Larkin arranged to-day with the Port of London authority for the transfer of berthing for the Bay class steamers from Tilbury to King George dook, adjoining Royal Albert, thereby reducing the distance of transport to London by half, while securing greater facilities for handling cargo.

The Duke of York referred to the growth of the movement and' its patriotic achievements would follow.
