Counsel’s application under the provision of the Customs Act for reduction to one quarter of the pine, because lie was an Oriental, and resident of New Zealand for forty years, and a first offender of any kind, was refused.
A DEADLOCK
WELLINGTON, January 16
A deadlock exists between the Alliance of Labour and unionists workin" under arbitration awards concerning the ■ filling of the vacant labour scat on the court. The Alliance of Labour has refused to nominate a candidate for the Dominion ballot proposed to be conducted by that section of labour working under the machinery of tho Arbitration Act. In fact, only Auckland and Christchurch afe interesting themselves in the proposed ballot, representations to Wellington and Dunedin on the matter having failed to elicit replies.
It is understood that the Executive Council of the Alliance of Labour intend to act on their own initiative; that the Executive Council will recommend to the various unions, societies, etc., in the Alliance how to vote.
