WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD

The Board met at 8.15 p.m. Present : Messrs J. J. Breeze (Chairman), Blank Davidson, Bjtehje, Chinn, and Burrell. An apology was made for the absence of Mr Morpl and two jnontlis leave was granted. The minutes were confirmed and outward cprrespUn|ion,ce approvedTNIYABD COR respond ence.

In connection with the drainage contract it was resplvcd to ask the contractor to at once put the track inside tftc pfaip gates in proper ®rd.er, fajijpg >yhj.cii the Board would carry put the work at jibe contractors expense. _ In connection with the application made tp the Rpalth Department for the appointment of a medical officer for Knmara, it was resolved to send a copy of the letter to the Knmara Medical Committee.

From Dr. Valintine, Wellington enquiring f'e bank overdraft. —ReceivedFrpip asking if the Board was prepared to take over responsibility of the St. Helen's djjstrfet midwife, stationed at Hokitika and control lier duties—Received; The Chairman moved that the Board decline to take over responsibility. Seconded by Mr Blank and carried. ■, Frqm Same stating, at present the Department did not know qf a suitable medical officer for Kumara, but that applications had been invited. —Received.

From Health Department, Wellington in connection with additional bank advance.—Received.

From Auckland Hospital Board, objecting to some clauses of the new Hospital Amendment Bill. —Received and supported except for one clause, to which tho Board took exception.

From Wanganui Board and four others, giving particulars of their district nurses.—Received. From District Railway ’Engineer. Gr.eym.putb and Resident Engineer, Greymbuth, granting permission to construct drain pipe line across railway lino and main road opposite hospital, subject to supervision of officers. —Received.

From Westland County Council granting permission to cross road with drainage pipes.—Received. From Dr. C. and Miss Mandl, executors, enclosing cheque for £SOO from the estate of the late Joseph Mandl ris a donation to the Westland Hospital Building Fund. —Received; The Chairman moved that a very hearty vote of thanks bo accorded to the donors for tlicir valuable donation. A s they were aware the late. Mr Joseph Mandl was an old member of the Board of Trustees, having been elected a member in .1884. The valuable gift would help to perpetuate the memory of the deceased. Secondod by Mr Blank and carried.

From R. Ritchie, Bruce Bay, asking for particulars of account for services of district nurse.—Received; to he supplied. Several letters dealing with charges of maintenance in hospital, were received and dealt with.

From Repatriation Committee enclosing £lO 4s 2d towards upkeep of an indigent child.—Received. The Master of Kumara Home reported on the success of the .Christmas cheer for the inmates which passed off very successfully, thanks to the generosity of the people of Kumara. —Received ; A hearty vote of thanks was passed to all concerned for the goodwill and generosity shown. Mr Burrell in acknowledging the vote of thanks in which he was included stated the whole success of the function was due to the interest shown by Mr Batson. From Matron, Otira Hospital expresing thanks for Christmas cheer.—Received.

From Westland Chamber of Commerce advising that a conference of all local bodies was proposed to be held on Wednesday, January 25th. to consider the best means of advancing the best interests of the district. —Received; Messrs Blank, Ritchie, Davidson, Chairman, and Secretary were appointed delegates. From Otira Committee enclosing contributions £3l 9s for December.—Received with thanks.

From -Kumara Borough Council forwarding £67 Is 4d, levy due to end of November.—Received.

From House Committee, Westland Hospital reporting matters satisfactory except that the work in connection with the openings for the drainage pipes, on which action had already been taken. The thanks of the Committee were due to all who had assisted in connection with the Christmas cheer for the inmates to the Matron and staff and all donors. The whole proceedings had been most successful.—Received; On the motion of Mr Davidson, a vote of appreciation wns passed to all concerned, Seconded by the Chairman and carried.

From South Westland Nurse (Sister Gunn) reporting 6 visits during the month; traversing statements made by some members at last meeting and suggesting that instead of continuing the present nurses’ home at Waiho that it be discontinued and that the Board instead pay to the nurse £1 per week and she would find her own quarters.— Received; Mr Ritchie moved that the Board could not approve of the suggestion made to terminate the arrangement made with Mr Donovan, for the lease of the cottage, and that matters continue as at present. Mr Chinn said the Board after making arrangements to rent a cottage at Waiho, to furnish it, and to connect thei telephone therewith, had found that the Nurse bad been living 9 miles up the Wataroa flat. He thought that the proper place for the permanent residence of the nurse should be at the Waiho within reach of the telephone. The nurse was a capable one in all respects, and a good horsewoman. He was very sorry that there was any disagreement between the Nurse and the Board. He seconded the motion, which was agreed to, the Chairman dissenting. The Chairman suggested the Board utilising some of their rooms for the purpose of a mother’s rest. After discussion it was resolved that the Town members enquire and report to next meeting. It was resolved to call a meeting of all willing to assist in the carrying out of a grand benefit for the hospital to take place in December next, to be held on Tuesday February 14th. An offer to arrange a concert by the

'Lyric Company in aid of the hospital funds was accepted by the Board with thanks. ' Mr Davidson stated that the watersupply was in a very dangerous stato and ire asked for authority to make -tests for water slo ins they would be able to provide a supply of their own. The Chairman moved that authority be given to make the necessary arranfoments to endeavour 'to find the provision of a suitable water supply. Seconded by Mr Ohirfn, 'and after some discussion agreed to. Accounts amounting to £544 8s 8d were passed for payment The Treasurer reported receipts £1193 15s 6d; Payments £1592 17s 7d; do 1 balance £lBlB 3a 2d. Receipts for building fund £soo.—Received.
