Only Australian.
LABOUR’S IDEA OK PAKLIA.MKNT.
SYDNEY, Jon. 4
A proposal is being mooted bv members'of the Australian Labour Party to endeavour to restrict membership ot Parliament in the Commonwealth to Australians, and it is likely that, as a move in this direction, the party will select only Australian-born candidates to contest elections. It is pointed out that as the Labour Party is against further migration, it should advocate Complete Australian self-government as a British coinmunitp; no Imperial federation; polity and administration to be decided t« the advice of Australian Minister only, subject to control of the Australian Parliaments; all Bills passed b\ I* u liament to receive the assent of Australian Ministers only; Australian High Court to be final Court of Appeal ; cessation of practice of recommending Australian citizens for Imperial honours. It should go lurther, and select only Australian-born candidates to contest the elections. Some members of the party, however, declare that as the movement receives big support from comparatively new arrivals, many of whom take a deep interest in the political life of the country, it cannot afford to take such a course of action. On reply to this tlm advocates of an “a|| Australian Parliament” contend that after a man from overseas has lived a number of years in this country and becomes thoroughly acquainted with the conditions under which the •ample live and work, he should not he altogether barred. The subject is one that will be debated at the annual conference of the party.
