sCuTh African AHletes. COMPETE IN MELBOURNE. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION,Received This Day at 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan 8. South Africans competed at night cycling. In the half mile Thursfield (South Africa) defeated Brown (Victoria) by ai length in <35 secs. In the quarter-mile Thursfield defeated Brown by a length in 31 4-5 secs.

In the mile, Brown beat Thursfield by a wheel in 2.28 2-5. t The five miles international scratch resulted Brown 1, Ramsden 2. Vanders buys (South Africa) 3. Won by half a length. Time 12.14 2-5. In tho 300 yards flat race. South Africa defeated Victoria. There was great interest in a series of sprint challenge events,, arranged by the Amateur Association between the visiting South African Athletic and Victorian cracks. The contests were of the keenest.

100 yards.—Osterlaak (Transvaal) 1, Gale (Victoria) 2, Kinsman (South, Africa) 3. It was the winner’s first appearance in Australia. He is still suffering slightly from a strained tendon. The winner took charge at fifty yards and won by two yards, with inches between the second and third. Time 10. 1-10 seconds.

Three hundred yards.—Gale 1, Osterlaak 2, Dunning (Victoria) 3. A great race. Gale had a slight advantage throughout and won by inches. Dunning two yards behind. Time 33 1-10 sec.

Victorian second thousand yards.— Newman (Victoria) 1, Carroll (Victoria) 2, Leathern (South Africa) 3. The last named made the early running.; Newman was in front at half a mile and won easily by thdee yards, two between second and third. Time 2.24 2-5.

Four hundred and forty yards relay race.—South Africa 1, New South Wales 2, Victoria 3. The Springboks showed themselves pastmasters in the changes over and made up yards. Won by three yards. Time L 44 4-5. The Victorians were disqualified for crossing over.
