A BOOK MARKET

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Messrs Matson and Co. report as follows regarding their slock sale yesterday:—

Store sheep.—A small yarding, mostly wethers, and the worst sale of the season, practically the whole of! the entries being passed at auction and any sales made being considerably below last quotations. Best actual sales of ewes and lambs all counted, 6s sd, wethers from 5s to 7s 2d.

Store cattle.—A small yarding and tlio quality generally was indifferent. No big cattle were yarded and the market generally was easier for all sorts, but most lots were cleared at auction. Two-year old steers to £3 2s, yearling ditto to 28s, 2-year heifers £2 10s to £3 10s, yearling ditto 35s to 455, cows 20s to 455.

Beef.—A very large yarding of moderate quality with no outstanding lines. The market again showed a further decline especially for unfinished sorts, good quality not suffering to same extent. Prime steel's £9 10s to £l2 10s, extra, to £l4 10s, medium £6 10s to £9 ss, others £4 15s to £6 ss. Prime heifers £0 to £7 10s, extra, to £0 17s 6d, others £4 5s to £4 IPs. Mutton. A medium yarding comprising mostly ewes. The market opened 2s below last week’s sale amd got worse towards the end, ewes especially suffering. Freezing buyers were able to operate to some extent, especially for light weight ewes and wethers. Prime wethers 17s 6d to 22s Id, medium 14s 6d' to 17s, lighter down to 12s 6d, best ewes to 14s 9d, prime 11s 6d to 13s 9d, medium 9s to 11s, lighter anil inferior down 'too 6s 6d. A large yarding of lambs and a, fair sale, freezing buyers •perating freely at lnist week’s limit and they secured a majority' of the entry, butchers not being so keen.
