Kumara Water Race.
SPECIAL TO GUAHUIAN. WELLINGTON, Dec 21. Mr Seddou (Westland) to-day asked the Minister of Mines to reconsider his decision to increase the charges tor I water on the Kumara-Waimea water ram. The miners, he said, were not having a very rosy time at present. He suggested that the Minister should defer the increase until after visiting the West Coast. Hon Mr Anderson replied that Government had been for many years losing money on the races. He considered the lie.sl, thing to do was to increase the priee of the water and try to make them jjay expenses. He had done this oil the West Coast and Central Otago. If he conceded that Mr Seddou was asking, lie might as well throw up the whole thing and let the bad. old conditions continue. If the races were absolutely necessary to an industry, the industry must pay the cost. Government was not in a position to proceed on any other plan. He thought it would be easier to judge whether tlie mines could pay the increased charges, if they bad to go on paying them till he made bis visit to the Coast.
