At the inquest on the Golden Horseshoe disaster the jury found that the accident was caused by the breaking 'T' of the main rod of the single winding engine, due to a defective weld in the break rod. RIPLEY DEFEATS McDEVITT. F SYDNEY, Deo. 18. In a sculling race Ripley defeated McDevitt. When a mile had lreen passed, Ripley was leading by five lengths, and at a mile and a half settled down to a steady swing, and increased his lead to ten lengths. McDevitt could make no impression upon him and from now on Ripley increased llis lead' and won with the greatest ease by 20 lengths. The time registered was 24 minutes. The weatlied was fine and the scullprs kept a straight' course throughout.
