I'ltc decision of the Government, to withdraw the commission allowed shopkeepers for the sale of stamps is not welcomed by booksellers. Mr I'. Ross, secretary of the Now Zealand Booksellers' Association Ims arranged with the I’ritttu Minister tor a deputation next Thursday mottling to ask for a reversal of tlio decision. Mr Ross remarks, on behalf of tile' association. that tlio commission of ‘2.1 per cent, is utterly inadequate as a return lor the sets'iwc rendered to the Government. The sale of stamps was an attraction to customers and assisted the
sale of tlie shopkeepers’ stock, hut the Government was on a vary good wicket. As shopkeepers all over the Dominion sold stamps, the Government was saved tile necessity of employing additional staff at considerable extra cost. The convenience to the public, especially in the suburbs was very great. Without it people would have to go to the nearest post office, to buy stamps. Mr Ross mentioned that one Wellington liook- ■ Her in a moderate way of business sold about L'3ooo worth of stamps a year, and he could not lv expected to take the risk «f carrying this stock without remuneration. The old commission was ton small to cover the risk.
