HfECIAI, TO G C Alt 1)1 AN . DCTY ON TYRES. WELLINGTON, Dec 3. Fatly on Saturday morning the House of Representatives reached the section of the tariff relating to rubber tyres. The duties proposed for all kinds ol rubber pneumatic tyres ami tubes were 10 per cent, preferential, 20 per cent, intermediate and 25 per cent, general. The I’rimc .Minister explained that the revenue from this source was to he earmarked for road maintenance and he undertook to establish a separate account so that the money might Hot ho diverted from its purpose, lie accepted ;i suggestion that tries for ordinary bicycles should he placed on the fretlist. ARTERIAL ROADS SCHEME. During the debate on lyres, members asked about the arterial roads scheme. The I’rime Minister and Minister for Public Works both referred to the matter, and though they had nothing very definite to say. they made it clear that the scheme is not going to proceed during tile present session. Mr (’cates spoke as though the details of the scheme were still unsettled. ENDING THE SESSION.
The House then adjourned until Monday afternoon. The progress that has Keen made during the week has caused members to hope again that they may finish the session before ’Xmas and if they maintain their present gait they may manage to do this. Their haste may involve doing some, things bndlv and leaving others undone, but apparently they are prepared to take some chances in that respect..
