The order further sets out tlie duties of the master of a ship in ijnaialitino as regards isolation of persons on hoard and notification of various matters to the Health Department. "Vo person liable to quarantine who has been exposed to the infection of any infectious disease shall he released before the end of life period of ineiilintinn for such disease.” and the periods of inciihation arc staled as follows: influenza, four days: cholera plague, yellow fever, diphtheria, scarlet fever, seven days; rercbro-spinal fevxer. ten days; typhus, encephalitis lethargien, poliomyelitis. II days; measles Iff' days; smallpox, 18 days; and enteric fever, whooping cough, chickenpax anil German measles. 9-1 days. The people in quarantine are required to obey a set of strict instructions anon t preserving order and cleanliness, limitation of smoking, abstinence from alcohol except under authority of the medical officer in charge, and other personal points. The regulations also include special measures to prevent the migration of rats and mice from ships, and for the destruction of rats, mice and other vermin on board. These include such precautions as tarring tieropes and lines each evening, the use of shields over lines and netting overporllioles and of fenders to keep the boat 4ft from the wharf. The complete lighting of the side of the ship is also authorised, together with removal of nettings and gangways during the hours of darkness, while another clause demands the examination and : fumigation of both ship and cargo. The Gazette notice also provides for the filling up of special forms giving full particulars of every ship from overseas with many other clauses covering all details of the matter.
