For the time being, the men may accept the new rates, hut it is difficult to tell how long industrial peace wifi prevail, unless some alterations are made so as to give the men higher actual wages. This was how Air F. 0. Ellis, Secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Union, summarised his views on the new award to the freezing workers. “The reduction,” said Air IF.Uis, “was greater to the unskilled man (the time-worker) than to the piece-worker, and thus it fell heaviest upon the man who was least able to boar it.” The only point upon which the men had gained anything, said Air Ellis wnsi some extra, payments for firemen and greasers who worked seven watches a week.
i TAXI DRIVERS’ AWARD. } CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 28. I The Canterbury Taxi-cab Drivers’ award was filed by the Arbitration Court to-day. It has granted several concessions to the workers. The basic wage has Iteon increased from t'3 10s to £3 15s; Imt (his increase has been taken off the bonus, which is now 8s per week, compared with 13s previously. The principal lienelit to the Union will be a reduction of the hours of work, which amounts to a. decrease of six hours in the case of “the short week”, and seven hours in the case of what is known as “the long week,” which includes a Sunday on. The rate of pay for overtime has lieen increased from Is 6d to Is lid an hour. The hours of work shall consist of 54 hours for the short week’s work and 63 hours for the long week’s work. Each worker shall be entitled to every alternative Sunday off.
SAI ALLFIELD CASE. AUCKLAND, Nov 28. The case for the plaintiff in the Smallfield case was confined to Counsel’s! address, with a right to call rehutting evidence. It is expected to occupy two more day*.
