CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18th. A special, meeting of the Chamber was held at 7 p.m. Present—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), in the chair, R Wild, G. Davidson, C. Nightingale, f)r Teichelmann, J. Ritchie and Stuart. The" Chairman stated the meeting had been called to consider matters affixing the district in regard to several items in the new tariff. After discussion the following resolutions were dealt with. Mr Perry moved“ That bavin** considered the amended tai iff as it affects this portion of the Dominion and after having given due weight to the necessity for revenue, to "the need for the development of New .'Zealand industries and to the provision of employment for New Zealand labor this Chamber urges that the tariff be amended in the following two items:—“First—timber, by making tbe duty on undressed sawn timber atthe rate of 4J- preferential, 5/- intermediate and G/- general psjr 100 super feet; with an additional 2/0 on dressed tindier. This scale will give the Minister something on which to negotiate reciprocity with such places as Australia where the duty on New Zealand timber is 6/- per i(X)ft; and will not entail any material increased cost to the consumer, since the New Zealand millers I will l>e in a position to supply the whole output of the tree on a hotter basis than only selected parts of each tree, which alone arc required, when the commoner parts are imported. Secondly. gold dredging machinery; by exempting certain parts that cannot be diverted to other uses than gold getting; such ns gold saving appliances, ripples and plates, screens with perforations

WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE. A meeting of the Westland branch o the Progress League was thou held Mr Wild presiding. T)r Teichelmann moved a resatutio; similar to that passed hv the Chain her of Commerce. Seconded by M J. Ritchie and carried. The League then rose.
