NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. GRES'AIDUTH, Xuv. US. 'Jilt 1 circumstances surrounding the stranding ut' tlie s.s. Perth on tin. North Tip on Sunday last won- discussed at a nautical inquiry held yesterday before NY. .Meldnun, Esq., S.AI., and Captains Thtirlewav and Schulze, as assessors. Air Customs, represented the Marine Depa! tment, and Mr K ilehingliain ;l j>pea red on hehall id the llarhoui Board. Mr Robinson (.of Wild and Robinson) a planned as local agent lor the Perth. Evidence was given by Captain McDonald (master), F. W. Wooleott (chief officer), Robert A. Robertson (second ollieer), Donald Strang (chief engineer), Alfred C. Deaie. (belinstnan), Captain Cox (harbourmaster). Alter i\ retirement ot five minutes the following verdict was aimouncc<i:

‘•The Court is of opinion that the stranding of the s.s. Perth on the North Tip-head of the Greymoutli harbour on Sunday, November Id, was due to her being struck by three successive unusually large rollers at the moment of her crossing the bar, throwing hei head to the northward and bringing her set out of the river to the slarboaid side, which tended to throw her out of the channel. That Captain McDonald, Master, had taken every precaution to ensure the salcty ol the vessel, e.g., by taking soundings oil the bar prior to attempting the crossing, a nd that he was quite justified, i" view of the fact that three ships had preceded him, Kamona Ngakuta and Kniapoi. No blame is attachable to < aptaiil McDonald, Air Robertson or any officer of the crew of the Perth, and the Court directs that his certificate he returned. The Court also considers that Captain McDonald is deserving ol special commendation for the skilful way in which be managed to get bis crew ashore with the heavy seas 1 uniting at the time.” the vessel abandoned. The local agont for the Perth made

a statement that lie had received a wire from the .Melbourne Steamship Company, abandoning llie vessel and l anding her over to the Underwriters.
