School Committees Conference.
WELLINGTON,' Oct. 26. The School Committees Associations’ l Conference concluded to-day, Mr S. G. j Smith, M.P.. presiding. Hie following , remits were adopted: i That this Conference suggest that school committees and settlers in baoki blocks should co-operate to do nil m their nlPer to provide accommodation I for teachers appointed to their dis- ! That- while this conference reaffirms , tho necessity for free school books and I requisites it expresses appreciation of ■ the Minister’s efforts to supply the i samtl at cost price and urges him to bring into operation such a system at the earliest possible moment. That the G-ovement he urged to at once authorise the use and issue of I : standardised liooks for all schools. | That in consequence of 'the prevalI once of epidemics in centres where a. ! ku-ge number of children congregate , there is most imperative need for I greater attentim being paid to more I healthy surroundings and cleaner school buildings. | Tlmt the Minister of Education he I ureed to make a, special grant by way of "increased capitation, to committees of grade A schools .and upwards, to enable tho appointment at an acle- : quote salary of permanent full-time i caretakers being made. 1 That fortv pupils lie the maximum i m ,der any one teacher, irrespective of . classes, and that pressure be brought to hear to limit that number to one room. That teachers' transfer expenses lie paid liv the Department in all cases ' where the transfer is ordered by the Hdueation Board. j That the Government lie urged to compel tho general gristing of vvheatmeal for bread and the baking of the same for the benefit of the health <" the school children. That the State provide free conipul--1 sory medical and dental treatment for all children attending State schools, j That pressure ho brought upon tho Government to give effect to the liiedi--1 cal inspection of schools, j That where candidates for proficiency i certificates or national scholarship have to travel from their homes to examinn- | thin centres actual travelling expenses , be jiaid. ° —— *
