MILFORD SOUND.

-Mr Adam Hamilton, M.P. for Wallace, has received the following particulars from the Minister in charge of the Tourist ‘Department”Referring to your letter ot the 3rd inst, the position with regard t*o the Miltord Sound house is that the general manager arranged with Mrs Sutherland to put under offer to the Government the whole of her property, includ ing all buildings, out-houses, iurniture, launches, boats, etc., and the Government has accepted the often. The necessary transfer is now being prepared for signature by Mrs Sutherland. The house will be available for use of tourists during the coming season, but a lot will require to be clone before it is in an up-to-date condition. People using it will have to take tin* place as it is, because it is quite impossible f *» the small staff of workmen at my disposal to put it in first-class condition in tin* course of a month. With t extra accommodation provided by Sutherland’s house and the Sandfly huts, which will now accommodate a large number of tourists, 1 see no reason why there should be any difficulty in placing all tourists during the co' ing reason. A launch is to Ik* placed on the Sound next season by Mr i. uvan. of Te Anau. At Qubit in Ilu‘ . where the congestion most often occurs, l am placing ft number ol Units to be sod when necessary. There have been tiTtiinny disabilities in regard to tins track during the last lew seasons, and it is a difficult matter to egntrol from j .such a distance, but i am hopetul that 1 ibis season the results will be bettei. j A great drawback and source of com- ( plaint lias been the state ol the road j ► from the Key ol the Lakes on to Te Anau, ami the Department can get no help from the local body, in the main, visitors have little or no complaint make.once they join the steamer at Anau. and become the guests or patrons of the Tourist Department, and I j have- many eulogistic letters Irom nil | conditions ol visitors on their tieal-j meiit hy the Department. •‘lt is recognised by tile Government that the Te Anait-Milford Walk is , among the eltiei of New Zealand attractions. Many thousands ot pome | Jiave I tee n spent on its development and j the work of completing a round trip j to Wakatipu is still receiving a sym- | pathetic treatment, anil it does seem ;i little unfair to receive the hostile criticism to which the Department has liken subjected in the past, when the local body in charge of the main access To the lake simply declines to assist in aiiv way towards"the maintenance amt improvement of the !lr " n^s ' -
