They have repudiated nearly every pledge they have given. They have borrowed and squandered; they have bungled the railways and the Dost and Telegraph Services; they have i ddeu roughshod over the rights of the people by maintaining war regulations long after the war; they have dissipated millions of pounds on an absolutely unsound scheme of land settlement—a scheme by which squatters have got the cash and the ex-soldiers are for the most part unable to make good in consequence.— Lyttelton Times.
