LONDON, Aug. 27. A sensation has been caused in the heavy woollen trade by the Fenton Textile Association, Ltd., of Batley. Dawsbury and Leeds, announcing owing to the recent extraordinary fall in stock values, and the consequent restriction of credit facilities, and the general abnormal state of the textile trade, they have been reluctantly compelled to apply to the High Con:l i-;r tbe appointment of a receiver. Fentons are one of tli most important of wool textile firms. It was turned into a company in 1919, and acquired a number of old-fashioned businesses. Its capital is £2,000,000, whereof Hen- i ry Fenton (chairman) bolds £1,010,000, or practically the whole of the issued capital. The firm’s solicitors state that with goodwill and co-operation, the directors are of the opinion that t creditors, both secured and unsecured, will not sustain any loss. WAGE REDUCTIONS. LONDON, Aug. 29. Wage reductions aggregating many millions sterlibg affecting three hundred thousand civil servants and one hundred and sixty thousand municipal local authorities staffs, seven hundred thousand builders, and five hundred thousand agricultural workers will commence in September. THE CHANNEL SWIM. LONDON, Aug. 28. Fred Record, a Kentish swimmer, who acted as companion t-o Holbein and other Channel swimmers, : nd Perrault of Montrealj intend to attempt to swim the Channel. FRANCO-GERMAN AGREEMENT. LONDON, Aug. 29. The “Daily Telegraph” correspondent at Paris states Loucheur and Rathonau have reached an agreement after conferring at Wiesbaden on “the subject of German reparation payments in kind. The agreement which requires Parliamentary confirmation in Paris and Berlin, provides that Germany shall furnish 350 million sterling worth of material to France yearly,, until 1926, France agreeing to forego part of Germany’s annual indemnity payments. This makes an important diange of policy on the part of France, which hither to strongly opposed Germany supplying either material or labour with which to restore the devastated areas. GREEK MOVEMENTS. LONDON, Aug 99. The “Morning Post’s” Athens corespondent- states Kemalist-s are offering a strong resistance. Their last established strong point is at Gordium Pass, but the Greek right wing is carrying ouitan encircling movement. An announcement- of the Greeks final victory is expected daily. At a great demonstration at Hill, most of the East End and suburban boroughs supported Poplar Council's recent refusal to levy rates which occasioned the High Court judgment. Banners were carried hearing the inscription—“ Poplar councillors are determined to go to prison to Secure equalization rates for poorer boroughs.” The speakers urged East Enders to be<rin a huge “no rent, no rates, no taxes,” strike stating it would give the biggest victory Labour had ever won. It is expected that Poplar Couiteillors will he re-arrested this week. PORTUGUESE POLICICS. (Received This Day at 8 a.m.) ’ LISBON, August 28. Cabinet has resigned, owing to a difference regarding a decree for the repression of gambling in the exchange. RAILWAY CATASTROPHE. ROME, August 28. A train filled with seaside visitors from Ladispole. collided with a' goods train at Gagliana. Thirty persons were killed and a hundred injured.
