HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 26. The Council met at 7.50 p.m. Pr sent:—.Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor *' Coiilson, McGregor, Parkhill, Blati King, Pilkington and Wood. Apologies were made for the absent of Messrs Lloyd and Perliam. ; The minutes were confirmed and mu I ward correspondence approved. DEPUTATION. " , A deputation consisting of Messr • ' Davidson, Preston, Carter, Bovd an 1 Niven waited on the Council represent ; ' ing the Beautifying Association. > , Mr Davidson said the Association do , sired permission to plant trees in scv ; era I of the streets, suggesting a chan apart, in Hampden Street for a com ( meneemont. lie thought the propose ■ v. as worth giving a trial, as it wouli improve the appearance of the streets They also asked that attention he givei to some of the unsightly fences anc vacant spaces in tin 1 town. They alsr asked that the gun trophy at the rail way station lie placed in a suitable position. Mr Preston in support suggested that they give the proposed tree planting a . trial in Hampden Street. The Association was-anxious to improve the general appearance of the town. Mr Boyd supported the proposals placed before the Council by the previous speakers. I Mr Carter urged the genet a I cleaning ; up of the town and urged that as much ns possible he done to improve the general appearance. He (-one!tided that as far as the gun was concerned he did not care where they placed it as long as they did not put it ill front of the Government Buildings. The Mayor thanked the deputation for their attendance and their requests would receive the careful attention of the Council. Mr Davidson thanked the Council lor the hearing given and then withdrew, j Discussing the representations of the depnt.nlion Mr Coiilson said he had always been in favour of planting trees in the streets. He thought they should do all they could in every possible way. lie moved that the request oi the Association he acceded to. and that permission be granted to plant trees. Mi Pilkington seconded the motion, considering that the proposal was one that would tend to greatly improve the general appearance of the town. The Mayor was in favor of planting trees, but not in this piece, which was far too damp, and, not a suitable one for the proposals. He thought they should keep the street®as open .‘is possible as where there were trees planted the roads were more difficult to maintain. Mr Blank quite approved what t l. Beautifying Association was doing in trying to improve the town, but he was not in favor of planting trees in the street. Mr King thought it would have a detrimental (‘fleet to plant liecs in the streets, as they would tend to cause milch trouble to the drains from the leaves. . Mr McGregor said he felt inclined to give tree planting a trial. Every cnee;: agement should be given to the Bra ufif \ iug Association in their etidealours. Noes—Wood, King, Blank, Parkhill and Mayor. it was resolved that permission be given to place the gun on Cass Square. It was resolved that the Council co-operate with the Beautifying Asso- ( ciatioii in an endeavour to improve the j appearance of the fences and hare sections as much as possible. - i INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. ! Mr Pilkington drew attention to a number of matters requiring attention ; in various streets, and moved the Public i Works Committee give the necessary attention. —Seconded by Mr Coiilson and j carried. Mr Wood gave notice of motion that notice of termination at the end of 6 months be given West land Hospital and the Mental Hospital of the present water supply contract and that an invitation he given to enter into a new contract for supply by meter at a price to he mutually agreed upon.
