OTIRA TUNNEL
THE LINING FINISHED. WELLINGTON, Aug. 21. The five-mile tunnel beneath the Southern Alps, which lias been in hand since August, l!)()7, is at last within definite distance of completion. Whor the contract was signed with the private contractors the time for completion was August 5), 1912. The actual position to day is that excepting for a few yards the whole lining is completed, the wniel unfinished portion being loft, because other important work has to be proceeded witb, such at plate-laying, whirl will he under way next week. Bails weighing 1001 bto the yard are being used. TLe only other places in New Zealand where there are such heav\ rails are the Bimutaka incline and Lyttelton tunnel. Good supplies of rails and sleepers are on the ground at Otira. A ballast pit is: being opened ii]) at Avalanche Creek. Platelaying will he completed within five or six months. The English electrical contractors have commenced erecting overhead workl'or the cables, and it is understood that their machinery is well advanced in England. One electrical locomotive out of six required is finished.
