FIRE AT REEFTON.

(Grey Argus). Tlie biggest tire of recent years in Reefton occurred between 5 and 6 o’clock on Thursday morning, when the business premises occupied by Patterson Bros, grocers; A. Sven son, fruiterer, and J. \ r . Burns, stationer, in the centre of Bron'dway, were completely gutted. Stapleton’s Hotel and Prentice’s drapers shop were also slightly damaged. The fire had a big 1 iold, and bad burst through tlie roof of Svenson’s shop, before the alarm was raised, and kicked for a while as though it would take the whole block, despite the capable efforts of the local Fire Brigade. For a long while the duel between file and water was so oven that i 1 was impossible to decide which could win, but the absence of wind and the splendid pressure of water available gradually decided in favour of the latter. Great praise it due to the Fire Brigade for the prompt and workmanlike nyimier in which they dealt wit’ flic menace. Tlie first hose was playing on tho fire within 5 or G minutes of t! lirst alarm signal, hut over 2090 feet hose was out, ami every nozzle in the Brigade’s possession was in action liefore the blaze was checked. Altlioup' the demolished premises cawiod some insurance, the loss will he considerable. Alessrs Patterson Bros was covered • • the amount of £2900 on building, stock and plant. Air Scantlebury’s premises and plant was insured for £7OO. and Al Burns’s stock for €2OO. The insurance of Air Svonson’s premises are €3OO on tlie building and £l5O on the stock and plant. The damage to AA r . Prentice’s drapery store is slight, but some of tbv stock was damaged bv water and smoke. The damage to Stapleton’s Hotel was principally confined to the walls of the up-stairs lied rooms, but the extent lias not yet been estimated. A Chinese cook gave the alarm about 5.30 a.m. A passage between Patterson’s and Prentice’s enabled the Brigade to get a bold on the fire. It is fortunate tlie damage was not more serious.
