[i)Y TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] mine INSPECTORS CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, Aug. 22 A conference of Inspectors of Alines Department was held in Wellington, being the first conference held since November, 1914. It considered suggestions for legislation made by the Departmental officials, by the colliery companies, the mining companies, and by other persons interested in mining Amendments to the regulations under the Coal Mines Acts and the Mines Acts were also considered. The Conference completely revised the regulations regarding the control of oil boring operations, and the supervision of stone quarries, to be in keeping with Stone Quarries Amendment Act, 1920 A full discussion took place with the object of standardising the preparation of monthly reports of the whole of the Inspection stall' of the .Mines Department in their examination of collieries, metal mines, and stone quarries. The conference also considered the question of reviewing the existing forms of State aid to mining to the advantage of the industry and the Dominion. Proposals were discussed to minimise the overlapping in duties of Inspectors of metal mines and collieries, the object being to reorganise flic work so as to reduce travelling expenses, and yet obtain greater efficiency. The results of the Conference are now being collated, ami will later lie submitted to the Minister of Mines for his consideration. KEENAN OUTPOINTS GLEKSON. AUCKLAND,. Aug. 22 J. Keenan outpointed P. Gleeson, (New South Wales) over the full Id rounds. The decision met with a mixed reception, but it was quite correct as the only time Gleeson appeared a winner was in the L till round when Keenan was groggy. Mr James Lillico until recently for many years one of the proprietors ol the Tiinaru Woollen Mills, and subsequently Manager for Mucky, Logan, Ltd., who purchased his mill, died very suddenly at Geraldine on Saturday afternoon. tie had gone out in hi- car and was talking to a man oil the road, when without warning, he fell forward mi the road, and never moved again. Tin. body was brought to Tiinaru. An inquest opened yesterday, and adjoin lied for medical evidence. He leaves a widow, a grown up son and two young children.

Bishop Averill (Anglican Bishop) was elected President. SHIPPING COLLISION ENQUIRY. DUNEDIN, Aug. 22. The Court of Enquiry into the collision between the steamer Calm and the harqno Rothesay Bay, which took place in Otago Harbour on July 7th, gave its decision to-day. Mr 11. G. AA id. lew son S.M., gave a written judgment. The findings were:— I That the collision was caused solely by tliei failure of the master of the Calm, while in charge thereof, and while steering a mid-channel course in narrow waters, and through a recognised anchorage off Carey’s Bay. in not keeping a proper look-out, with the result that the proximity of the barquo was not discovered in time to avoid a collision. 2- That, the regulation riding lights uere displayed in the proper position, and were burning brightly on the barque prior ,o and at the time, of the collision. 3 That the pilot was justified in anchoring the Rothesay Bay in the position lie did. The Court was of opinion that the circumstances did not call for dealing with the certificate of tin- master of the Calm but considered that, be should pay the Crown costs CIO 19*.
