AMATE UR ATT! LETICS.
LONDON. July 22
The Committee of the mateur Roving Association, in conference with representatives of the Universities and those of Henley Regatta and the piovineial rowers, passed a resolution to the effect that organised international athletic competitions, like Olympiads, entailing a vast expenditure, are entirely contrary to the true spirit ol amateur sport, and will endanger, instead of fostering friendly relations with international contestants, owing to the exaggerated importance attach ed to victories therein. The Conference also decided not to support the British Olympic Association offering, instead, itself to arrange occasional friendly contests open to British and foreign amateurs. The conference also refused to alter the present definition of amateur.

The United States does not favour any preliminary london cojiilerpnce. This is stated to lie because it will take the gilt edge off the '‘gingerbread” of the Washington conference Neither side yielded at the Imperial Conference on this point. Then the Conference adjourned till Monday.
Delegates are hoping that a compromise will be ('fleeted during the weekend, failing which one Dominion Premier predicts that the C-onterence will break up within a. week.
A HITCH ARISES. LONDON, July 23. The latest Washington despatches that have been submitted to the Imperial Conference, do not contribute to the settlement of the controversy between London and Washington.
HUGHES AND MASSEY. LONDON, July 23. Mr Hughes and Mr Mastsey will bp unable to attend at Washington in November.
They will}, therefore, ulrge that a preliminary conference be held in l/m----don immediately, at which Japan, the United States and other interested Power* should ho represented for tin* purpose of settling Pacific problems and leaving disarmament to be settled later at Washington. At such Inter conference Britain might represent the whole Empire.
DP MANNTX. PEKIN, July 22. Archbishop Mannix arrived at Manila from Japan, and he was enthusiastically received there. The local -Vroh_ bishop, and the’ other church dignitaries welcomed him. Dr Mannix sailed for Australia later. MANILA, July 22. Alrehbialtop Mannix, who a/rrived here from Hongkong, sails for Melbourne on July 23.
BOY MTTBDEBEB. LONDON, July 22 In connection with the recent murder of two girls at Abertillery, the verdict of (lie Coroner’s Jury was one of wilful murder against (lie boy Jones. Throughout the ease Jones, who is only a 15-year-old hoy, took copious notes of evidence. He was also continually consulting his solicitor. He was quite calm and unmoved, while his mother gave evidence of his having had a hath, and of his being found without a shirt, which he explained he had accidentally dropped into some water.
