THE FUTURE OF GAS?
This question was referred to in a recent address by the Government’s Electrical Expert. He states that with the coining of the national electrical scheme, gas-con-sumption would increase, together with the making of coal by-products. World-wide experience proves that the development of electricity and the growth of gas-consumption go together. In Wellington, for instance, the consumption of gas lias increased sevenfold since the- introduction of electricity.
Tlie City of Toronto, Canada, is supplied by current from the hydro-electric installation at Niagara, and the Toronto Consumers’ Gas Company is therefore in competition with -electricity from water power. Nevertheless the Gas Company lias made progress by leaps and hounds, and doubled its output between 1908 and 1914.
The Wellington Gas Company has in its possession reports from Auckland N.Z.: to Bergen (Sweden) which prove the same tendency. The fact is, gas has so many unique advantages that it cannot ho economically replaced. The demand of the public for - convenient light, heat and power is so great that it has never yet been- completely satisfied. Even with a stationary population, gas-consumption constantly increases; hut with a fast-grow-ing population, as in Wellington,. the future growth of the gas business is absolutely sure. Some of the suburbs — such as Karori and Onslow —are not- yet connected with the gas supply, and therefore they provide an important field for expansion. - This is the reason for the. Wellington Gas Company’s Issue of S per cent Mortgage Debentures, £250,000 of which are now offered for public subscription. This is a very fine investment, for the security consists of concrete assets valued at £550,000. Tlie trustee of the Mortgage Debenture Trust Stock Deed is the Guardian Trust and Executors Company. Those who wish to apply for Debentures should act promptly. Prospectus procurable from the Bank of New Zealand, members of a Stock Exchange, of the Wellington Gas C'o., Ltd.. Wellington.
