OBITUARY

MORITZ JOSEPH MANDL,

AETAT 85 YEARS

We deeply regret having to record the death of Mr Marita Joseph Matldl, (file of the oldest and most respected residents of the district, which took place this morning about 10 o’clock af. his residence, Fitzherbert Street, passing peacefully away after a long illness. The deceased was the son of Dr Ferdin-

and Mandl, of Vienna, where lie waj, horn in 1836, and was educated the ter He came out to Australia in the year 1860, landing at Melbourne, and afterwards came to Now Zealand and waj W on the Tuapekfl and Waitahupa goldfields for two ygars., At the, .duthihal? of the West, CUfist diggiiigs IVfP Matidi was attracted to Hokitika, coming round from Dunedin in a large whaleboat with other adventurous spirits, the journey taking three weeks. On arrival he embarked in business first as a storekeeper at Blue Spur, and later on as a brewer at the present site of the large and prosperous Westland Brewery,

which has been carried on successfully over since. Mr Mandl ha's taken' a prominent part in past years in the

public life of the town. He was a

member of the Hokitika Borough Council for a number of years, was Mayor in 1899 and also in 1890-91, in 1895-93 and

in 1905-6, was a member of the Charitable Aid Board for several years, and

took a general interest in the advance-

ment of the district.' Mr Mandl took a prominent interest in railway extension, being Chairman of the Grev-Hoki-tika Railway League and Chairman of the Committee that urged on tlie Otira Tunnel contract in the general agitation for that work. Mf Mandl has at all times proved a good -citizett, llnd

during the war lie took a prominent part in all loyal gatherings, voicing his loyalty on every possible occasion, and expressing liis appreciation of being enabled to live under the British flag. During his long residence in the town he lias at all times proved a good citizen and liis death will he generallydeplored. The deceased was a widower, liis wife having died many years ago. He leaves a family of one sbn (Dr Charles Mandl of Foxton), aiid foilr (laughters (Mrs H. L. Pickett of Auckland, Airs T. H. Coltman of Wellington, Sister Mary Joseph (Margaret) of the local Convent, and Miss Rachel Mandl). The family will have tlie deep sympathy of the community in the loss sustained.

Tlie funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon. '
