A UNION’S PROTEST

AUCKLAND, July 20,

A meeting of repreentatives of the Iron Masters’ Association, the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, the Boiler makers’ and Bridge Builders’ Union, and the Iron and Brass Moulders’ Union resolved to telegram the following resolution to the Minister of Public Works, tho Hon J. G. Coates: “This meeting respectfully protests against the Public Works Department deleting clauses from contracts for plate steel girders specifying that tho work shall be done in New Zealand. It respectfully draws the attention of the Minister to the increasing amount of unemployment in the iron trade in the Dominion and requests the Minister to re-insert the deleted clauses in the specifications of any work which can be done in the Dominion.”

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN

SCHOOLS

Provision for the adopting of -the

“Nelson System” of religious instructions in schools, was made by the Wellington education Board which had tiefore it the following report from its Executive Committed.

“That in order to afford an opportunity of religious instruction to children of those school committees of which are prepared to grant permission under proper conditions, provision to bo added after the word “Daily” in the bylaw No 18, which reads:—“Teachers shall give instructions for five hours daily during five days in each week, except in infant schools and infant classes in which teaching may be for four hours daily, and there must not be less than ajr hour’s interval between morning and afternoon schools, and no detention of scholars shall in any way reduce this interval.” Proviso to read “Provided that where tin' arrangements are approved by the school committee of the district arc made for imparting religious instruction, then on one day in the week the number of hours of secular instructions may he reduced to 4J.” The report was adopted, one member dissenting.
