A demons!.ration was bold by tuc Canterbury l’iogress League yesterday to lay belore the Acting Prime Minister Sir F. I). Roll, Canterbury’s claims to have the School of Forestry located in ClirisLclmrcli. The League elicited from Sir Francis Bell some important statements.
These were: That, as Commissioner im State Forests, he Intel decided upon (’.•uitorlmry College some time ago as the only college to which the Forestry School could properly he attached ; and that Canterbury was the most suitable district lor the school. Further, nut since tin- matter had unexpectedly hecomo a subject of controversy between different provinces, it must now be decided bv Cabinet, and therefore he could not reiterate his opinion. lie further stated that the Covein incut could no allow the l uivei-hiy Senate to decide the matter, lie said the Prime .Minister had consulted him by cable from England, before replying loan Auckland cablegram upon the subject. Tbo question would be decided by Cabinet; solely ill t lie interests of tbo Dominion as a whole. It would he derided by a vote ol the Cabinet, without reference to polities, or whether one locality rather than another, supported ilie present Covernment. Ile could piomise iis truly for Mr Massey, as for himself, that so long as they held office, the question would bo determined on those lines, not upon lines presented in what ho might call “another place.”
