TURNIP GROWING
KOITFI!ANGI FARMER’S SUCCESS.
Mr R. Houliston, the well-known farmer of Koiterangi, has during his term of 15 years farming on Hie Coast grown many crops of turnips, which in the opinion of neighbours were of a high class order, but Air Houliston himself, was never satisfied, especially in regard to the qualify; Hie bulk of the turnips (although well-grown) being unsound in the centre. It has been Mr Houliston’s aim to try and grow turnips of a sounder quality, and therefore ho has been carrying out various experiments, endeavouring to reach that end. Liming with good cultivation lias given good improvement, as also has a dressing of woodashes, but no total effectual remedy had been reached, until this season .when a decisive beneficial result has been obtained in the quality of the Turnips, such result being obtained by the. application of a top-dressing of nitrate of soda, immediately after the turnips were thinned. The experiment underway this season was on a small area and will be carried out on a larger area this next season. With a view to collecting accumulative evidence on this question the Department of Agriculture will undertake several trialsthroughout the West Coast.
