WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD.
MONDAY, JULY 11th. The Board met at 8.15 p.m. Present —Messrs J. J. Breeze, (Chairman), G. H. Blank, G. Davidson, H. M.onk, J. Ritchie and AV. Burrell. The minutes were confirmed and correspondence outward approvsd. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE It was resolved to draw the attention of the Afaster of Kumara Home to a matter in which the instructions nad been exceeded and to ask that +he instructions in future be carried out. From Hon. C. J. Pair, Minister of Hospitals acknowledging letter from Board covering recommendation by Dr. iiaird recommending the earliest possible bridging of rivers in South Westland and stating they had beet handed ■in to the Minister of Public Wonts for favourable attention.—ltecei/:d. From Dr. Valintine, Wellington, in connection with medical examination of 1 i bool children.—Received; The Chairman considered the Board should give iho matter its most favour i ale conritie ration. .* From Same, acknowledging advice that the current year’s estimates had been reduced by £9OO and Honing Oie reduction would not involve a reduction of the high standard of administration.—Received, From Minister o : Health forwarding approval of drainage scheme at hospital as drawn up by Air Varney.— Received. It was resolved to ask <hat Mr Varney be allowed to supervise the work and that Air J. C. Maefarlane provide the levels. From Westland County Council regretting decision of Board not to m< et the Council and stating the levy had been accepted under protest.- Received. From Otago Board, forwarding cheque for payment of maintenance of 06 go patients in Westland Hospital.- Received. From District Engineer, Greymouth, in reference to a crossing over the railway near hospital, and declining request.— Received ; Mr Davidson moved the application be again urged for favourable. consideration. Seconded by Air Ritchie and carried. From Hawera Hospital Board askingfor particulars of keeping imoks.—Received.

O’Brien resigning posit’on as dairyman at Westland Hospital Received and accepted; The, Chairman of the House Committee to (ill the vacancy. From .T. S. Nash. Greymv.ith in rrfere nee to work necessary in connect rn with installation of steam laundry and estimating cost at £154.. —Received' Air Davidson said Mr Nash agreed to place the plant on trucks at C 25, and to overtake the erection of same at a fee, but the Board had broken ’heir gi< ement not having the building >' act’d hy Fehruary last. After discussion it was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of ATr Davidson to make the best possible arrangements to have the' plant erected. From Sister Gunn, South Westland enclosing bare report.—Received. From Master Old People’s Home report on matters at institution.—Receiv od. Alt - AJonk moved that a committee be set up to consider the possibility of reducing the staff at Kumarn. Mr Ritchie favoured the Chairman and Air Burrell reporting as the nest course to be followed. Afr Burrell said there were patients there who should bo in Westland Hospital. and these took up much of the time of the master. Air Blank said he had always been of opinion that the Home was run too expensively. He did not think the Board should keep a gentleman there. Ho said this with Air Batson present. He thought a reduction s'; uld be made. Afr Davidson said he visited the I loom as much or more than other members and lie bad always found the home clean and ably looked after He suggested that the Board visit Kurnara ami discuss the subject there. H- offered to take five members to Kumara in bis car at any time. After discussion the offer was accepted with ill aides and it was resolved that; a. visit be made next Sunday a committee being appointed to report consisting of the Chairman, Alessrs Chinn, Morel, Alonk, Davidson, and Burrell. REPORTS. From Surgeon Superintendent V estla ml Hospital reporting patients on June Ist., as 44, admitted during June 24 males; 12 females; total treated 55 males 25 females—-80. Discharged cured 24 males 13 females, relieved 3 males 1 female; died 1 male; Total discharged 28 males 14 females—42; remaining in hospital 27 males, 11 females—3B. In hospital for 2 months, 10 males, 1 female—l 7. Received. The House Committee (per Mr Davidson) reported matters satisfactory at the hospital and recommending that another nurse bo secured to allow of the arrangement of nurses holidays being carried out.—Received and adopted. From Finance Committee recommending payment of accounts amounting to £875 14s 3d.—Received and adopted. Air Rlank moved that the overdue accounts (as sot forth) he sued for forthwith.—Seconded by Mr Alonk and carried. From Treasurer reporting receipts £1072 65.; payments C‘l ,318 12s. 4d.; credit balance £243 18s Bd. Received. Mr Davidson reported the Band visited the Hospital on Sunday to the delight of the patients and staff. Mr Davidson moved the appreciation of the Board in the efforts of the Band in connection with their Art Union which realised the sum of £284,. The
Chairman seconded the motion which was carried. The Board rose at 10.15 p.m.
