(Received This Day at 10.15 a.m.) LONDON; July 11 r The “Times” in a leader, says Mr ■c Harding’s momentous timely statement opens a new, and we hope, a fruitful phase In the problem of the Pacific. Nd doubt the British Government with the fiill concurrence of the Dominions will gladlv atid promptly accept iti the same spirit as it is made. The Dominions Premiers, who at the week-end were guests at Chequers Court * were probably aware of the imminence ot the message and have already discussed the expediency of a Pacific Conference. For this reason the arrival of the message was specially timely, precluding misapprehensions as to the American attitude. These misunderstandings now appear trivial in view of Mr Harding’s opportune action. The task of the proposed conference is both delica e and as dangerous as any conference ever essayed to discuss. The Peace Co ference and Paris were not faced with vaster issues, fraught with grea 1 sibilities for good or evil. The Conference’s haphazard methods should serve as a warning and deterrent to the Pacific Conference which should on > ie summoned after a most careful exam n ation of the preliminary problems and the utmost caution in preparation ot the agenda. With these precautions t should succeed to the world s lasting benefit. ...
