Barnes who was formerly captain of the Marlborough. completed his fifty in 102 minutes. After tea. Gregory hit Barnes hard on the head lmt Barnes continued. Collins missed Sharp when forty-two and also missed a chance of running cither man out off the same stroke. Barnes played a sterling innings of the crispest, for 125 minutes. He hit four fours. The Australians joined in the applause.
Gregory was severe on Ellis’s fingers. The batsman was three times attended for knocks. Meantime Sharp got fifty in eighty minutes and then hit Mailey for three fours in one over. He was caught at first slip. His score included ten fours. Richard Tyldesloy hit Mailey for six and was c aught next ball.
