The superb statue of Joan of Are. which formerly stood in front of the great door c ; Bums Cathedral, from, whence it was removed for safety during the bomardment that laid most < the historic, buildings in France in ruins, is to be restored to its pedestal in time for the celebration of the French national festival on July 14, states the Paris correspondent of the London “Morning Post.” The statue which vast hastily carried off on a British motor lorry when the Germans were venting their worst spite on the Cathedral was brought into Paris for safety and placed in the Louvre, where 1 it lias since remained. The damage done to the sword of the warrior maid bv a German shell splinter has been remedied, and on July 14 the statute, which was cast in 1873 and presented to the C'itv of,Reims by a local committee in 1892. will he triumphantly taken hack to the Cathedral and replaced in position by a group of writers and Journalists who served in the war.
ll is difficult to discern tin 1 principle on which the Judges of the Supreme C ourt are acting in allotting sentences in embezzlement cases comments a W ellington paper.- in some “reiormative detention'’ is ordered, and in others "im pnsonment with hard labour.” Prisoners under the first classification are on a distinctly superior looting to those allotted hard labour, and the door is open to their early release. Yesterday a county clerk, whose deficiencies totalled £703, spread over a period ot seven years, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour, in another recent case the theft of £333 of Native Land Court moneys resulted in a Civil servant going to gaol for fifteen months with hard labour. On the other hand, a Wellington Civil servant, who made away with more than ten times that amount of public money, was given three years’ reformative detention. Prisoners sentenced to reformative detention apparently come in ahead of those sent to hard labour in consideration for early release* and have other privileges. Their Honours have doubtless good reasons for the sentences they allotted, but it is in the public interest that the dividing line between hard labour and reformative detention should be more clearly marked and more generally understood. It would be extremely dangerous if this reform in *he criminal law led to a belief that the big thief could get a firstclass ticket to gaol, while the sum!’ thief went in second-clase.
