INCOME TAX. WELLINGTON, July 4
Judgment was given in the Court of Appeal to-day in the case in which Wright, Stephenson and Co., appealed agaist the assessment for the purpose of income tax on the company’s contribution to its pensions and benevolent funds. Justices Sim and Salmoiud found that, despite the company’s gqod in.eutious, it was impossible to escape the conclusion that the sum in question

■5 ol the Land and Income Tax Act 11116. No system of profit sharing in my manner affected the fundamental principle that a company must account hr and pay taxes on the whole of its profits. Mr Justice Stringer dissented, holding that the amount paid bv the •ompany was part of its expenditure. The assessment by the Commissioner if 'Paxes was confirmed and the appeal vas ■‘'dismissed with costs.
NEW TREATMENT FOR LEPROSY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 5. The six lepers at Quail Island are undergoing a new form of treatment and a good deal of interest is being taken in the results. The treatment consists of injections of a colloidal formed of antimony tartarate which has been found in other cases to lessen the lesions of thq skin rapidly, and to promote the general well being of the patient. The patients at Quail Island are all men. One of the them has the disease in a fairly acute form, but all stages of the disease are represented and some of the cases are of long standing. The new treatment does not ensure a certain cure, but is certain to prevent the patients from ; losing ground. WATERSIDE DISPUTE. WELLINGTON, July 5. ‘ Trouble developed to-day in connection with the unloading of the Scales barque Rona, which had a narrow escape when she ran on a pinnacle of rocks while entering the harbour last Sunday week and was subsequently removed to Miramar where the coal cargo was to be discharged. The dispute that bus now arisen concerns the use of the Burton block, an unloading device which has figured in wharf disputes for a long time. When the men engaged had ceased work Mr W. H. G. Bennett, Manager of the Co-operative Employment Association, President E. Glover and Acting Secretary J. Laurenson, of the Waterside Workers’ Union wont out to Miramar in order to investigate the grievance. It is understood that the men have agreed to work the Rona under protest as the vessel has to go on the Patent Slip on a certain date.
THE NEW ZEALAND LOAN. WELLINGTON, July 5
No further advice has been received by the Government in respect to the flotation of the New Zealand loan in London up to the present. Not even a copy of the prospectus has been received, beyond the bare particulars announced by the Acting Prime Minister. It. is not expected th*t much further will he known as to the factors affecting the flotation until Mr Massey returns. LONDON, July 4. GREYM.OUTH, July 6 Robert Thompson, farmer, of Barrytown, was awakened early on Monday to find his bedroom full of smoke. He extinguished the fire. On the cross beams under the house lie subsequently found two plugs, of gelignite. The police were informed and later arrested John Puzan, a labourer, who was brought up at the Greymoutb Magis- ’ trate’s Court to-day on a charge of arson and remanded till Monday next.
