Pons-Winnecke
••TIIK ROAD HOG OF THE HE AY ENS.” “Interested” writes wishing to know when and where to look for the new comet, Ponc-Winnecklc. The Government Astronomer (Dr Adams) states that, given a clear sky, the comet may |,o seen from midnight oil, the direction being south of east. As a more particular direction the comet will be in the vicinity ol the well-known planet, |sota Celi, on July 2 and 3. ••Pons” is the speed manije of the heavens, and is putting up enormous records in the absence of celestial police, lie has already become so faint that lie can only ho picked up with a telescope or opera-glasses. That is not surprising in view of the fact that ho was 13,000,000 miles away I torn the earth on June 23. Such is his pace that on July 3 lie will lie 19.000,000 miles distant and on July 13, 25,000,000 These distances may lie a million or two miles out. hut in measuring 4le infinite such paltry distances do not count. “Pons” has already become that faint that the comet, according to the astronomer, is scarcely worth bothering any more about.
