WELLINGTON, June 24. “I am unable to advise the Government to recommend Parliament to adopt the financial methods you have outlined,” is the reply sent by the acting Finance Minister, Sir Francis Bell, to "the Auckland Labour Representation Committee 'and other Labour organisations, which have sent him a series of resolutions demanding the imposition of a levy on tho accumulated wealth arising from the abnormal war conditions. This wenlth they declared to be over 200 millions sterling. The levy was urged in order • to pay off the war debt, and stabilise prices, to carry on authorised public works, and to make advances to local bodies, so that work may be found for thy unemployed. The Unions also urged that union rates of wages should j lie paid for all work, whether of the “relief” character or otherwise.

Mr Anderson staed that he was not in a position at present to give the public the full particulars regarding the statement which be said evidently came from interested parties who were trying to draw the Government, but tho Minister refused to enter into any explanation at this stage about sugar prices. In respect, however to the importation of sugar from Java and the statement made that tho Board of Trade had warned at least one firm in Wellington that it was likely to be re- , fused permission to land it. Mr An- , derson said that lie could give this an emphatic denial. FATAL MILL ACCIDENT. , AUCKLAND, June 22.

A fatal accident occurred at the Kauri Timber Company’s mill in the city to-day. Robert Walker, a sawyer by occupation was crushed between two logs and sustained internal injuries.
